Little Trick-or-Treat Pails

Little Halloween Bucket

Look how cute my latest project turned out! Little trick or treat pails made from cans. I made them out of my dogs' food cans, some paint, some cinnamon to make them look rusted and old, Mod Podge® and some printables I found on the Internet.

Little Trick-or-Treat Pails

Supplies
used tin cans
acrylic paint
ground cinnamon, etc.
vintage labels
Mod Podge®
raffia
tissue paper
candy
vintage tags

Instructions
1. First, remove the original labels from the cans and wash them thoroughly. Dog food cans are a nice size, but you can use whatever size you have. I run mine through the dishwasher.

2. When the cans are clean and dry, paint them with whatever color you want and let dry. Usually they will need 2-3 coats of paint.

3. Select some vintage images for your labels.  You can find them on Pinterest® by searching for "vintage Halloween printables" or "vintage Halloween labels." And you can buy them on Etsy here.

For dog food-sized cans, print your labels out at 4 inches by 6 inches on regular computer paper. Tear around the outside of each printed label to fit the size of the can you are using. They look much better torn than cut straight with scissors.

4. Once your cans are dry, paint the backs of the labels with Mod Podge® and stick them on. Then paint the Mod Podge® all the way around the cans to seal them, including the fronts and edges of the labels. While wet, you can sprinkle them with cinnamon and other spices, but not too much - just enough to make them look rusty. I like to apply the spice a little heavier around the label edges, and I let the paint color show through on the sides and back. Let the cans sit to dry.

5. When dry, drill a hole in each side and attach a raffia handle. Find some tissue paper you like and place inside the cans. Then fill with candy corn or whatever kind of candy you would like. If you use candy corn, you might not want to eat it - just leave it for the decoration and pop of color. I think the little mini Halloween candy bars would be cute too!

6. Lastly, attach some cute vintage-style tags with string.
